Ralph Neville, 1st Earl of Westmorland, 6th Baron Neville of Raby, KG, Earl Marshal, warden of the west march, royal councillor
Dates: c.1364–21 October 1425
Biography
Ralph Neville was the dominant northern magnate of his generation. He controlled Raby, Brancepeth, Middleham and Sheriff Hutton, rebuilt or enlarged several of those residences, and used marriages to consolidate both northern estates and royal connections. His second marriage to Joan Beaufort, daughter of John of Gaunt, produced the younger Beaufort-Neville branch.
