Biography

Edward Cecil was the third son of Thomas Cecil, 1st Earl of Exeter, and Dorothy Nevill, making him a grandson of William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley. He served for many years in the Netherlands and held commands in English military expeditions under Elizabeth I, James I, and Charles I. His elevation to the peerage was connected with his command of the 1625 expedition against Spain and with his residence and landed association at Wimbledon and Putney. The Wimbledon and Putney titles became extinct on his death because he left no surviving male heir.
