GPS Location & Recorded Land Areas

Representative GPS point: 50.95291, -1.32597

Location / boundary notes:

Identity: confirmed — The TNA/MDR record and associated Winchester College manorial records identify Allington as a manor in South Stoneham. Independent historical sources record the same manor under the forms Allington, Aldington and Ellatune/Ellatvne, and identify its probable manor-house site as Allington Manor Farm, now on Allington Lane in the West End/Eastleigh area. This distinguishes it from same-named manors elsewhere in England.
Representative point: 50.95291, -1.32597
Basis: documented_manor_house — The historical manor-house site is identified as Allington Farm/Allington Manor Farm. The modern mapped Allington Manor Farm Business Centre lies at this location, close to the documented Allington Lane manor site and the Eastleigh Borough heritage record grid reference SU 477 169.
Point confidence: medium
Boundary status: representative_point_only
Boundary period: Medieval to early modern manor; later estate evidence principally documented in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries
Boundary confidence: none
Boundary basis: The evidence establishes the location and substantial territorial extent of the manor/estate but does not provide a sufficiently accessible, complete and unambiguous perimeter for the historical manorial land. A 1770 survey of the manor is cited in the Eastleigh heritage documentation, and the 1844-1845 South Stoneham tithe map is identified as a relevant cartographic source. A 1872 sale description reported an estate of about 800 acres, with the River Itchen forming approximately two miles of its boundary, but this is an estate description rather than a complete mapped manor boundary. The modern 22-hectare heritage-site area is only the surviving manor-house and parkland core and must not be substituted for the historical manor.

Warnings / uncertainty:
- No reliable complete historical manor boundary polygon was located in the accessible evidence.
- Do not substitute the modern civil parish of West End, the former parish of South Stoneham, the 22-hectare surviving manor-house site, or any current estate/property boundary for the medieval or early-modern manorial extent.
- The reported c.800-acre 1872 estate and River Itchen boundary evidence indicate scale and orientation but are insufficient by themselves to reconstruct a defensible perimeter.
