Location: East Walton, Norfolk
Places / associated places: East Walton, Norfolk
Location & Extent
GPS Location & Recorded Land Areas
Representative GPS point: 52.7157, 0.57845
Identity: confirmed — The National Archives record and Historic England evidence identify this as the former West Dereham Abbey manor subsequently known as Abbots manor, East Walton Abbots, or East Walton Abbys alias Abbots. The site is explicitly distinguished from East Walton's separate Howards and Stranges and Bishop of Norwich manors.
Representative point: 52.71570, 0.57845
Basis: documented_manor_house — Historic England places the former manor house on or close to the site of present Abbey Farm, approximately 15 metres north of the ruins of St Andrew's Church. The church is located at National Grid Reference TF 74287 16196; the returned WGS84 point is an approximate point for the former manor-house site immediately north of it.
Point confidence: medium
Boundary status: representative_point_only
Boundary period: Medieval to post-Dissolution manor; documented evidence principally spans c.1196 to the late sixteenth century
Boundary confidence: none
Boundary basis: The available evidence securely locates the manorial centre at Abbey Farm and records some associated land, including the parcel called Gowties, but does not provide a complete, historically defensible perimeter for the Abbots manor. Historic England notes a manorial boundary near St Andrew's and St Mary's churches, but this is only a local boundary reference and cannot be used to reconstruct the full estate extent. The manor should not be substituted with the modern East Walton parish boundary.

Warnings / uncertainty:
- The representative coordinate is an evidence-based approximation for the former manor-house site near Abbey Farm, not a surveyed surviving building location.
- No complete historical polygon for the manorial land was located. The modern East Walton parish or civil-parish boundary must not be used as a substitute.
- The late-sixteenth-century association with Thomas Baker does not establish the exact post-Dissolution conveyance or prove that every former monastic component was held as one undivided estate.
About the Manor
Abbots in East Walton was a manor in East Walton, Norfolk, formerly held by the Premonstratensian Abbey of St Mary at West Dereham. It was subsequently known as Abbots manor, East Walton Abbots, or East Walton Abbys alias Abbots. The manor house appears to have stood at or near the site of the present Abbey Farm, close to the ruins of St Andrew's Church. A late sixteenth-century survey referred to a capital messuage called Richolds at this location, and identified the associated land as part of the manor formerly held by West Dereham Abbey. The name Gowties is recorded for part of the Abbots manor estate. The manor should not be confused with the separate East Walton manors of Howards and Stranges, East Walton, or Bishop of Norwich.
Ownership / Holder Account
The manor is securely documented as held by West Dereham Abbey from about 1196 until the Dissolution of the Monasteries. West Dereham Abbey was founded in 1188 by Hubert Walter and its foundation was confirmed by King John in 1199. The abbey was dissolved in 1539, after which the consulted public sources do not establish the precise Crown grant, sale, or other conveyance by which the East Walton Abbots estate passed into private hands. By 1593, land formerly belonging to the Abbots manor was incorporated in an estate surveyed as Thomas Baker's manor of Emhouse; a late sixteenth-century Chancery case also describes Thomas Baker as lord of the manor and refers specifically to land parcel of East Walton Abbots alias Abbots, called Gowties, formerly belonging to West Dereham. This establishes a post-Dissolution connection with Thomas Baker, but not the exact date or legal form of the transfer, nor whether he held every component of the former monastic manor as a single undivided estate. No later public source located in this research securely identifies a subsequent lord of the specific Abbots in East Walton manor.
