Nicholas Leigh, Nicholas Leigh of Addington, gentleman

Dates: died 1565

Biography

Nicholas Leigh was the Tudor-era Leigh landholder associated with Addington. In 1544 he negotiated with Henry VIII for former religious-house properties at Addington, including Addington Rectory and Addington Temple, thereby consolidating the wider Leigh estate.

Notes / Sources

The 1544 exchange concerns the religious-house manors and should be distinguished from the older Addington Aguillonds or Bardolfs manor.

The 1544 transaction involved an estate formerly held by the Knights Hospitaller and should not be confused with the separate pre-existing Leigh holding.

He was the first securely documented lay holder of Addington Temple after the Dissolution.
