About the Manor

Heathfield The armiger is Lord of the Manor of Heathfield, a Market Town in East Sussex, and is a Member of the Manorial Society of Great Britain. He is American, with English ancestry on his maternal side which extends back into the East Sussex region, including Heathfield. He also has ties maternally to the Rutherford Clan of Scotland. It is these ancestral links that led to him acquiring the Lordship of the Manor of Heathfield.

Documented medieval and early-modern manor

Heathfield has a documented manorial record extending into the medieval episcopal estate of the Bishops of Chichester. The research workbook records a royal market grant in 1234, a Heathfield custumal/rental in the Bishop of Chichester records for 1253–1262, later rentals and court material, and continuing evidence for common, waste, copyhold and manorial administration.

Crown and Sackville transition

A Patent Roll calendar entry records the Crown taking the Manor of Heathfield on 12 July 1561 under the Act-of-Exchange machinery. The exact subsequent Crown-to-Sackville instrument remains an identified research gap. By 23 May 1592, however, a Sackville settlement is described as expressly involving Heathfield, providing the earliest currently located direct Sackville-era legal anchor in the compiled research.

Sackville and De La Warr administration

The surviving archive trail places Heathfield within the Sackville and later De La Warr estate context for centuries. A direct manor-specific anchor survives for 14 August 1873, when a Manor of Heathfield court was held in the name of Reginald Windsor, Earl De La Warr, Baron Buckhurst. The research deliberately distinguishes peerage succession from proof of lordship or manor-title transmission.

Modern private chain

The Winter 2024 Manorial Services catalogue marked Heathfield as sold and stated that the Sackville family had held the lordship until the very end of the twentieth century, when it was purchased by the family of the then-current owners. The exact late-twentieth-century disposal instrument, purchaser family and intermediate chain remain unresolved in the research workbook.

Ownership / Holder Account

Source assertion: Christopher Repetsky, MD, DABFM, FAAFP, FRSM — Lord of the Manor of Heathfield. Imported as an unregistered named current holder; identity is claimable subject to administrator approval.

The structured title/descent register below is imported from the workbook's Title & Ownership Chain. Its evidence grades are preserved in the imported entries. The working chain runs from the Bishops of Chichester, through Crown possession from 1561, into the Sackville/Dorset estate, the Sackville-West/De La Warr branch, the late-twentieth-century private-owner gap, the Winter 2024 sale, and the documented 3 February 2025 endpoint.

Important: peerage succession is not treated as proof of manor-title succession. Where the exact Heathfield instrument has not been located, the imported entry remains marked supported, provisional or unverified rather than being promoted to a documented transfer.

Objectives

The current research programme is organised around 13 mandatory closure targets. These include the unresolved Crown-to-Sackville transfer, item-level Sackville/De La Warr deed mapping, late-twentieth-century disposal evidence, the modern predecessor/vendor chain, and the remaining land/rights reconstruction tasks. Each target is imported into the Manor Research Archive and Research Gaps with its own close-out test.

Private Act 13 Cha. 2 St. 1 c. 6 settled Knole, Seal and Kemsing on the Earl of Dorset and his heirs while charging Bexhill, Cowding and 'other Lands in the County of Sussex' with a £130 annual rentcharge. Specialist transcription of ESRO ACC 7755/7/3 records division of part of Henry Pelham's Sussex estate. Lot 2 expressly includes the manors of Burwash and Burghurst, plus Dallington, Brightling and Warbleton property. High-value route for Target 13 because it fixes which neighbouring Pelham manors/estates were in the 1716–1767 division.

Title-deed schedules / archival cross-reference — 1717 schedule; 1808 reschedule; 1828 partition / c.1829 deed-handover annotations · U269/E50; U269/E51; Appendix I (old press marks to modern catalogue references)

The catalogue states that after the 1828 partition many deeds for Elizabeth, Countess De La Warr's share were handed to Lord De La Warr, and that E50 was marked in ink accordingly around the 1829 partition.

Manorial rental — 1850 · SAG435

National Trust heritage records identify an Ashburnham Rental of the Manor of Burwash & Burghurst. Its date is only 17 years before Kelly's 1867 plural-lord wording at Heathfield, making it a high-value comparator for the 'three lords' problem.

Conveyance / trust of Heathfield property — 10 May 1855 · SAS/DD 775A

Henry Chrismas of Heathfield, gent., and Thomas Chrismas of Bexhill, gent., to George Thomas of Catsfield, appraiser: Hale Hill Farm property in Heathfield comprising a messuage, barn, garden and land, with several parcels near South Bishop's Wood; late parochial admeasurement 22 acres 2 roods 11 perches, with detailed road and neighbouring-owner boundaries.

Directory / contemporary lordship description — 1867 · Kelly's Post Office Directory, Sussex, 1867 — Heathfield

Kelly's Post Office Directory for 1867 states of Heathfield: 'The Earls of Ashburnham, Chichester, and De La Warr are lords of the manor.' This contemporaneous plural-lordship wording conflicts with any simplistic narrative of a single uncontested parish-wide manor and requires identification of the separate manorial interests or jurisdictions meant by the directory.

Gazetteer / lordship description — 1870–1872 · John Marius Wilson, Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales (1870–72), Heathfield

The Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales describes Heathfield property as subdivided and says the manor belongs to the Earls Ashburnham, Chichester and De La Warr. This independently repeats the three-earl formulation found in the 1867 directory.

Auctioneer / estate-agent valuations and sales particulars — collection lead — 1873–1976 (current WAT catalogue; older TNA 2005 accession listing gave c.1870–1990) · WAT (older accession listing: ACC 9131)

Watsons of Heathfield, valuers and estate agents: the current The Keep WAT catalogue describes valuations and sale particulars for 1873–1976. The older TNA 2005 accession listing for ACC 9131 described E Watson & Sons material as c.1870–1990; that broader accession range is retained as a catalogue-history discrepancy, not as the current fonds date.

Trade directory / occupancy and landownership evidence — 1878 · Kelly's Directory of Sussex 1878, Heathfield p.3035; ContentDM id 355707

Kelly's Heathfield entry calls Heathfield Park the seat of Sir Charles William Blunt but expressly says it was occupied by Frederick Henry Scott; it also lists Scott at Heathfield Park and Edmund Brand as land steward to Sir Charles Blunt. This directly resolves the Scott first-name problem for the documented occupier by 1878.

Census / residence evidence — 3 April 1881 · RG 11/1044, Hailsham District, Hellingly Subdistrict, Heathfield ED 13

1881 census transcription places Frederick H. Scott, age 42, barrister at law (not in practice), at Heathfield Park with wife Edith R. Scott. This independently confirms Frederick's residence between the 1878 directory occupation evidence and the 1890 sale period.

Marriage settlement / De La Warr family papers accession — 1890 · ACC 11603

ESRO annual reporting identifies the 1890 marriage settlement of Lionel Charles Cranfield Sackville, Viscount Cantelupe, with Dorothy Heseltine, with associated papers, as accession 11603.

Local institutional history / ownership claim — 1890 · Society history page

Heathfield Horticultural Society's history states that the Society was founded in 1890 and that 'Francis Scott, the new owner of Heathfield Park' strongly promoted its creation. This conflicts with contemporary evidence naming Frederick Henry Scott as the resident and must be preserved as an unresolved identity/ownership clue.

Trade directory / residency evidence — 1890 directory evidence · Kelly's Directory of Sussex 1890, Eastbourne/Hailsham county-magistrates page; ContentDM id 188548

Kelly's 1890 Sussex directory county-magistrates list places Sir Charles William Blunt and Frederick Henry Scott in the same Hailsham petty-sessional division, both associated with Heathfield Park. This independently confirms Frederick Henry Scott remained the relevant Scott around the 1890 sale period.

· Historical Directories ContentDM id 364302; principal-seats page

A digitised Sussex directory page headed 'LIST OF THE PRINCIPAL SEATS IN SUSSEX' lists 'Heathfield park, Frederick Henry Scott esq. D.L., J.P.' This is stronger than a simple residence entry and shows Frederick Henry Scott recognised as the named holder/occupant of the seat immediately around the post-Blunt sale period.

Succession / contemporary peerage-directory conflict — 5 Nov 1890–1893 · Debrett's Peerage 1893 — Blunt baronet entry

Sir Charles William Blunt died 5 Nov 1890 and Sir William Blunt succeeded as 7th Bt. Contemporary Debrett 1893 still lists Heathfield Park among Sir William's seats. This conflicts with the broad Historic England statement that the Blunt family sold the estate in lots in 1890 and with local/secondary claims of a Scott purchase that year.

Parish green records — 1893–1895 · PAR372/26

Heathfield parish records include a dedicated 'Parish green' series.

Directory / contemporary lordship description — 1899 · Kelly's Directory of Sussex, 1899 — Heathfield

Kelly's Directory for 1899 again states that the Earls of Ashburnham, Chichester and De La Warr are lords of the manor at Heathfield, showing that the plural-lordship description persisted for at least three decades.

Contemporary directory / residence evidence — 1899 · Kelly's Directory of Sussex, 1899 — Brightling

Kelly's Directory of Sussex (1899) places Frederick Henry Scott at Brightling Park, whose property owner is separately stated as P. Tew. This establishes that the Frederick Henry Scott documented at Heathfield Park in 1878/1890 had moved to Brightling by 1899.

Contemporary directory / estate-residence evidence — 1899 · Kelly's Directory of Sussex, 1899 — Heathfield

Kelly's Directory of Sussex (1899) describes Heathfield Park as occupied by William Cleverly Alexander and lists him among the principal landowners; the same entry repeats that the Earls of Ashburnham, Chichester and De La Warr are lords of the manor.

Heathfield is explicitly one of the manors represented in that ADA deposit.

Prints the Sussex 1341 taxation returns from TNA material; the Heathfield material is in the Sussex section around p.356. Later scholarship identifies minor errors in the printed Heathfield values and cites the underlying TNA return E 179/189/17.
Useful for searchable/page-image access. Cross-check Heathfield figures against the underlying record because the scholarly appendix identifies a printed error.

Trash v Wood — reported High Court of Chancery case · 4 My. & Cr. 324; 41 E.R. 126; 9 L.J. Ch. (N.S.) 105; 4 Jur. (O.S.) 669

Direct authority on Heathfield copyhold custom: youngest/younger son as customary heir; identifies a 1763 surrender-to-will, copyhold messuage, and lord's rent.
Original Chancery pleadings and the underlying Manor of Heathfield court surrender/admission remain research targets.

Post Office Directory of Sussex — Heathfield entry · Kelly's Post Office Directory 1867

States that the Thursday market was still held at the Crown Inn; gives parish area as 7,970 acres; and says the Earls of Ashburnham, Chichester and De La Warr were 'lords of the manor'.
The plural 'lords of the manor' is ambiguous and may refer to multiple manors/interests in the parish; do not read it as proof that all three jointly held the Manor of Heathfield.

Contains no.1122, 15 Feb 1565: grant to Richard and Winifred Sackville of Wilmington and appurtenances extending into Hethefelde, plus other former Chichester Dean and Chapter property.
Heathfield appears as a locality of Wilmington appurtenances; this is not a grant of the Manor of Heathfield.

Calendar of the Patent Rolls Preserved in the Public Record Office: Elizabeth I, Volume IV, 1566–1569 · CPR Elizabeth I vol. IV, 1566–1569; Internet Archive identifier calendarofpatent04grea_1

Covers the only early Patent Roll interval left between the directly inspected 1565 and 1569–72 volumes. Potentially relevant to the missing Crown-to-Sackville Manor of Heathfield grant.

Elizabeth I Patent Roll calendar continuation — 1582–1592 search ladder · Verified ranges include: 27 Eliz. C66/1254–1270; 28 Eliz. C66/1271–1285; 30 Eliz. C66/1304–1321; 33 Eliz. C66/1362–1378; 34 Eliz. C66/1379–1394. FamilySearch/List & Index Society catalogues provide the intervening volumes.

Finite search ladder for the still-missing Crown-to-Sackville Manor of Heathfield instrument after the published HMSO CPR volumes. Particularly important are 27 Eliz. 1584–85, 28 Eliz. 1585–86, 29 Eliz. 1586–87, 30 Eliz. 1587–88, 33 Eliz. 1590–91 and 34 Eliz. 1591–92.
This converts the old 'search Patent Rolls before 1592' task into a defined volume-by-volume job. Do not infer absence from volumes that have only been bibliographically identified.

'The Art and Craft of Chicken Cramming': Poultry in the Weald of Sussex 1850–1950 · Agricultural History Review 30 (1982)

Contains high-value Heathfield social/landownership context; p.18 links 1767 Burwash purchase to Chichester/Ashburnham disputes and gives 1842 parish ownership figures citing TDE16.
Target 13 and land-mass comparator. Preserve 'probably originating' wording as the author's qualified interpretation.

Kelly's Directory of Sussex — Hailsham/Eastbourne county-magistrates page · University of Leicester Historical Directories; ContentDM id 188548

Dunkin Collection catalogue / subject index (Sussex antiquarian collection) · BL Add MS 39326–39546; Heathfield index entry 'PR 21.9'

The collection remains a broad Sussex antiquarian resource, but 21.9 is not a verified manorial route.
[Inference] PR appears from context to be the parish-register category. Do not treat this entry as evidence concerning the Manor/Lordship of Heathfield.

Contemporary 1893 entry for Sir William Blunt, 7th Bt., still lists Heathfield Park among his seats after his succession in November 1890, complicating the asserted 1890 sale sequence.

Sussex directory — List of Principal Seats: Heathfield Park / Frederick Henry Scott · University of Leicester ContentDM id 364302

Lists Heathfield Park under the principal seats with Frederick Henry Scott esq. D.L., J.P.; useful direct contemporary evidence around the 1890 sale transition.
Do not convert a seat-listing into legal freehold ownership.

Records & References

100 records found.

Directory / contemporary lordship description — 1867

Date / period: 1867 Type: Directory / contemporary lordship description Reference: Kelly's Post Office Directory, Sussex, 1867 — Heathfield

Full Heathfield directory entry transcribed online with source identified
This does NOT displace the direct 1873 De La Warr Heathfield court record. The task is to explain why the directory names three earls.

Composite manorial rentals — Ashburnham estate — 1860 and c.1906–1921

Date / period: 1860 and c.1906–1921 Type: Composite manorial rentals — Ashburnham estate Reference: Accession 8155

Official TNA accessions data identifies composite rentals for the manors of Ashburnham, Broomham, Broomham Parkgate, Allfrays, Burwash, Burghurst, Cowden, Dallington, Hasleden, Hastings, Ittington, Netherfield, Rockland and Wartling.
Accession-level description verified; rental contents must be inspected for Heathfield parcels/tenants
High-value comparison source for the exact period when directories describe Ashburnham as one of Heathfield's lords.

Conveyance / trust of Heathfield property — 10 May 1855

Date / period: 10 May 1855 Type: Conveyance / trust of Heathfield property Reference: SAS/DD 775A

Henry Chrismas of Heathfield, gent., and Thomas Chrismas of Bexhill, gent., to George Thomas of Catsfield, appraiser: Hale Hill Farm property in Heathfield comprising a messuage, barn, garden and land, with several parcels near South Bishop's Wood; late parochial admeasurement 22 acres 2 roods 11 perches, with detailed road and neighbouring-owner boundaries.
Detailed abstract online citing the exact ESRO reference; original conveyance held at The Keep
Associated Heathfield conveyance rather than proof of Manor of Heathfield tenure. It is useful for parcel/boundary reconstruction and for the Chrismas family later appearing in the 1873 Heathfield court admission.

Manorial rental — 1850

Date / period: 1850 Type: Manorial rental Reference: SAG435

National Trust heritage records identify an Ashburnham Rental of the Manor of Burwash & Burghurst. Its date is only 17 years before Kelly's 1867 plural-lord wording at Heathfield, making it a high-value comparator for the 'three lords' problem.
Reference publicly indexed; manuscript access requires repository follow-up.
Does not prove Ashburnham ownership of the De La Warr Manor of Heathfield. Search for Heathfield-border tenants, commons and parcels.

Tithe map and apportionment — 1841 & 1842

Date / period: 1841 & 1842 Type: Tithe map and apportionment Reference: TDE 16/1-2

Heathfield tithe map and award/apportionment: parish-wide ownership, occupation, plot and land-use survey useful for reconstructing holdings and later manor/common boundaries.
Archive references listed in The Keep's official rating/tax guide; consult/order via The Keep
Not a manorial document, but one of the strongest parish-scale property/extent sources.

Schedule of deeds / De La Warr estate title papers — 1836–1892

Date / period: 1836–1892 Type: Schedule of deeds / De La Warr estate title papers Reference: DLW 391

Schedule of deeds relating to De La Warr estates in Sussex, Cambridgeshire, Oxfordshire and the City of London. The Keep identifies this exact item in its Hartfield guide and places it within DLW 370–392, the abstracts-of-title and schedules-of-deeds series.
Archive-held schedule; no public images located.
High-priority item for the 19th-century Sackville/De La Warr devolution. It may contain the deed trail for Sussex estates after the 1825 division; Heathfield-specific entries must be extracted from the schedule rather than assumed.

Additional Sackville / Earls De La Warr archive accession — c.1826–2012

Date / period: c.1826–2012 Type: Additional Sackville / Earls De La Warr archive accession Reference: ACC 11382 (within DLW accessions)

Official TNA accessions data records additional papers of the Sackville family, Earls De La Warr, spanning c.1826–2012 as ACC 11382. The Keep's DLW parent catalogue also lists ACC 11382 among later accessions. Item-level Heathfield contents are not exposed on the parent page.
Collection/accession level verified; item-level schedule must be obtained from The Keep.
Potentially the strongest archive route for the late De La Warr period because its date span reaches 2012, but no Heathfield sale/conveyance is proved until the item schedule is searched.

Probate / copyhold, waste and quitrent evidence — Will 8 Dec 1826; proved 17 Oct 1827

Date / period: Will 8 Dec 1826; proved 17 Oct 1827 Type: Probate / copyhold, waste and quitrent evidence Reference: PBT 1/1/76/200

Will of Thomas Nailard, farmer of Heathfield. It devises 'Common Field', about six acres near the Burwash–Lewes turnpike, expressly held as copyhold of the Manor of Heathfield; also a cottage and about 10 acres 3 roods of waste ground near Swiss Corner on Heathfield Down, and directs payment of quitrents due from his hereditaments and real estate.
Full modern transcript available online; a 2023/2024 compiled-wills PDF reproduces the will on pp. 238–240; original probate record held at The Keep
Especially valuable because it supplies parcel names, acreages, road/topographic location, explicit Heathfield copyhold tenure, waste ground and quitrent language.

Will / estate division — Sackville estates — 1825

Date / period: 1825 Type: Will / estate division — Sackville estates Reference: Original will / settlement reference not yet identified

On the death of Arabella, Duchess of Dorset, the Sackville estates were divided between her daughters. National Trust states that Buckhurst and the Sussex estates went to Elizabeth Sackville, wife of George West, 5th Earl De La Warr; the Knole Estate history states that Arabella's will divided the estates.
Authoritative National Trust estate history and Knole Estate history are available online; the original legal instrument has not yet been identified in DLW/U269/probate catalogues.
This is the crucial Sackville/Dorset → De La Warr bridge for the Sussex estate. It corrects the simplistic assumption that the 5th Duke of Dorset automatically inherited the Sackville Sussex estates with the dukedom in 1815.

Official archival-context statement / manorial waste — Nov 1819

Date / period: Nov 1819 Type: Official archival-context statement / manorial waste Reference: ESC 289/3/1 (image); legal conveyance/waste instrument not yet identified

The Keep states that Heathfield National School ('Round School') was built on former waste of the Manor of Heathfield; it opened in November 1819. The surviving watercolour of the school is ESC 289/3/1.
Official Keep article online; digital image viewable in The Keep reference rooms
Strong evidence of a specific parcel described by the archive as former manorial waste, but the image itself is not the title/conveyance instrument.

Estate map — 1819

Date / period: 1819 Type: Estate map Reference: AMS 6080/3

William Figg map of the Heathfield estate.
Archive-held; direct item link not verified
Useful for estate extent/topography; not necessarily proof of lordship title.

Additional De La Warr correspondence accession — 1815–2006

Date / period: 1815–2006 Type: Additional De La Warr correspondence accession Reference: ACC 9403

Official TNA accessions listing records Sackville family, Earls De La Warr additional correspondence spanning 1815–2006 as ACC 9403. The accession is also listed under the DLW parent fonds. It potentially covers the modern estate-management period but no Heathfield sale document has yet been identified within it.
Accession-level description verified; detailed item schedule not publicly extracted
High-value modern correspondence container because it extends to 2006; not evidence of a Heathfield conveyance until item-level contents are checked.

Additional De La Warr household / estate accounts accession — 1813–1930

Date / period: 1813–1930 Type: Additional De La Warr household / estate accounts accession Reference: ACC 10939

Official TNA 2011 accessions listing records Sackville family, Earls De La Warr household papers comprising tradesmen's and labourers' accounts, corn accounts and household accounts, 1813–1930, as ACC 10939.
Accession-level description verified; detailed item schedule not publicly extracted
More useful for estate administration and identifying agents/payees than for the late-20th-century title sale.

Red Book / estate design — 1794

Date / period: 1794 Type: Red Book / estate design Reference: AMS 6310

Humphry Repton Red Book for Heathfield Park.
Archive-held; direct item link not verified

Date / period: 1791 Type: Sale particulars Reference: ACC 5281/962 Box 1

Heathfield Park sale particulars; associated estate history.

Date / period: 1781–1790 Type: Estate plan / cropbook Reference: RF 15/21

Plan from a cropbook for the Heathfield Estate.
Archive-held; catalogue/digital link not verified
Estate record rather than a court record; potentially useful for extent and boundaries.

Copyhold surrender / will / Chancery case on manorial custom — 26 May 1763–20 Nov 1839

Date / period: 26 May 1763–20 Nov 1839 Type: Copyhold surrender / will / Chancery case on manorial custom Reference: Trash v Wood (1839) 4 My. & Cr. 324; 41 E.R. 126; also 9 L.J. Ch. (N.S.) 105; 4 Jur. (O.S.) 669

Trash v Wood concerns a copyhold messuage and premises held of the Manor of Heathfield. Elizabeth Swane's will of 26 May 1763 followed a surrender to the use of her will. The later Chancery litigation proved the manor's customary descent to the younger/youngest son and records deductions for taxes, lord's rent, repairs and expenses.
Full reported judgment text available online; original 1763 Heathfield surrender/court entry and Chancery file references remain unresolved
This is direct legal evidence for Heathfield copyhold custom. Jonathan Trash received rents but was not admitted tenant; the dispute turned on the customary heir under the manor's descent rule.

Final concord / quarter-manor and multi-parish estate transaction — Trinity Term 1755

Date / period: Trinity Term 1755 Type: Final concord / quarter-manor and multi-parish estate transaction Reference: CHR/13/12

ESRO CHR/13/12 records a final concord between Thomas Heaton and Thomas Francis, gent., and Lewis Watson, esq., and Grace his wife. It conveys a quarter of numerous named manors including Burwash, Burghurst, Bivelham, Cowden and Dallington, plus very large categories of land, meadow, pasture, wood, furze/heath in a long parish list that expressly includes Heathfield.
CRITICAL: Heathfield is in the parish list for the lands, not in the list of quarter-manor interests. This proves a Pelham/Watson-connected landed interest in Heathfield parish, NOT a quarter share of the Manor of Heathfield.

Sale / conveyance covenant — water rights — 1721

Date / period: 1721 Type: Sale / conveyance covenant — water rights Reference: SAS/RF/3/95, p.45

Sale of Bayley Park (later Heathfield Park), stated as about 227 acres, with a covenant reserving to Major John Fuller liberty to draw water from estate ponds, including the Banqueting House pond, for his furnaces subject to sluice levels.
Archive reference quoted in secondary history/blog; original image not located online.
Associated industrial/estate right, not evidence of the Manor of Heathfield title. The acreage and covenant wording should be checked against the original.

Title-deed schedules / archival cross-reference — 1717 schedule; 1808 reschedule; 1828 partition / c.1829 deed-handover annotations

Date / period: 1717 schedule; 1808 reschedule; 1828 partition / c.1829 deed-handover annotations Type: Title-deed schedules / archival cross-reference Reference: U269/E50; U269/E51; Appendix I (old press marks to modern catalogue references)

Kent Archives identifies U269/E50 as the 1717 schedule of title deeds in the Knole Muniment Room and U269/E51 as the 1808 schedule for more recent deeds. The catalogue states that after the 1828 partition many deeds for Elizabeth, Countess De La Warr's share were handed to Lord De La Warr, and that E50 was marked in ink accordingly around the 1829 partition.
Official catalogue is online. The actual schedules/typescript Appendix I need archive consultation or reproduction to isolate any Heathfield press marks and exact deed references.
Not itself proof that Heathfield was in Elizabeth's 1828 allotted share. Use Appendix I to trace Heathfield old press marks into present U269 references, especially the Heathfield deed/manorial groups identified by The Keep.

Transfer: Long-running episcopal possession / manorial administration

Medieval Heathfield custumals, rentals, market/fair grants and court material establish episcopal manorial administration. No Crown→Sackville Manor instrument is yet proved.

Instrument status: Exact post-1561 Crown→Sackville Manor conveyance remains missing. Do not use 1586 as a transfer date.

Source: C 66/964; CCEd bishops chronology; U269/T108–109; later C66 Patent Rolls — source link

Transfer: Crown possession from 12 Jul 1561; later Sackville acquisition date/instrument unresolved

12 Jul 1561 directly proves Crown acquisition of the Manor of Heathfield. On 15 Feb 1565 a separate patent grants Richard and Winifred Sackville Wilmington and appurtenances extending into Hethefelde, but does not grant the Manor of Heathfield. A 31 Dec 1571 Buckhurst alienation licence includes Bishopstone but again omits Heathfield. Thomas Sackville is directly proved disposing of Heathfield by the 23 May 1592 settlement.

The new patents show Sackville land/property interests touching Heathfield/Bishopstone well before 1592, but neither located patent is the missing manor grant. The same T108-9 groups are also assigned to Cowding deeds, while Bexhill deeds extend through T108-10.

Instrument status: MISSING: the item-level deed or patent transferring the Manor of Heathfield itself from Crown control to the Sackville manorial estate after 12 Jul 1561 and before 23 May 1592. The Keep officially lists it as a Heathfield deed group and separately as Cowding deeds; this aligns unusually well with the Cowding-Bexhill-Heathfield triplet in the 1592 settlement. This does not prove the 1592 deed is in a particular T108/T109 sub-item.

Transfer: Marriage settlement / deed of settlement expressly involving Heathfield

Phillips describes a counterpart deed at Knole dated 23 May 1592 from Thomas, Lord Buckhurst to John Cobham, settling the manors and lands in Cowding, Bexhill and Heathfield on Henry Sackville's marriage to Alice Colson.

The 1592 deed groups Heathfield with Bexhill and Cowding inside the Sackville estate and proves Sackville control/disposal of a Heathfield manorial interest by this date. It does not imply exclusive ownership of all land or waste within Heathfield parish: SAS-PN/735 proves substantial Pelham/Thetcher Heathfield holdings in 1585, and the 1595 Downs map is reported as made for Sir Thomas Pelham.

Instrument status: Specific original counterpart is reported at Knole; modern U269 shelfmark has not yet been mapped.

This remains the earliest currently located direct Sackville-era legal anchor for the Manor/lands of Heathfield.

Transfer: Family succession after Thomas Sackville

Heathfield manorial records continue through the Sackville estate; exact 1608 Heathfield conveyance has not been extracted.

Robert succeeded Thomas in the family titles/estate line and died in 1609.

Instrument status: DLW settlements/wills series exists; specific Heathfield succession instrument not yet identified.

Placeholder in legal chain pending will/settlement extraction.

Transfer: Succeeded father Robert

Sackville manorial administration continues; Heathfield court-book series begins 1606–1622.

Richard inherited the family estate and titles.

Instrument status: Exact Heathfield settlement/devise not extracted.

Richard died without surviving male heir; estate/title succession then moved to brother Edward.

Transfer: Succeeded elder brother Richard

Heathfield court-book series 1624–1652 aligns exactly with Edward's succession period.

Family estate/title succession to Edward is established; Knole history notes return/continuity of family estate through Civil War.

Instrument status: Exact Heathfield deed of transmission not extracted.

Very useful date alignment, but court-book ownership heading must still be inspected.

Transfer: Succeeded father Edward

Heathfield manorial records continue through the Sackville estate.

History of Parliament states he succeeded his father on 18 Jul 1652; will dated 5 Jan 1674, proved 1 Sep 1677.

Instrument status: Will exists and is cited in scholarship; exact archive/probate copy and Heathfield schedule not yet linked.

This is a promising generation because a dated will is known.

Transfer: Inherited Sackville estate

Heathfield court books span 1668–1689 during Charles's period.

Knole Estate history explicitly says the estate was inherited by Charles in 1677.

Transfer: Succeeded Charles

Heathfield manorial series continues; later estate history confirms his will controlled major Sackville estate devolution.

National Trust says his widow Arabella received Knole for life and managed the Sackville estates after his death.

Instrument status: The exact will/settlement affecting Heathfield has not been identified.

The 1799 will is likely fundamental to the later 1825 division.

Transfer: Title succession diverges from estate control

Holding arrangement: Other

No Heathfield-specific transfer instrument yet extracted.

National Trust says the 3rd Duke died in 1799 leaving heir George, but Knole to Arabella for life; she managed the Sackville estates.

Instrument status: Exact beneficial/legal structure for Heathfield requires the 3rd Duke's will/settlement.

Important: peerage holder and estate controller are not necessarily the same person.

Source: John Frederick will / Sackville settlement — source link

Transfer: 4th Duke dies; 5th Duke inherits title but not the Sackville estates

Heathfield is within the Sussex Sackville estate archive but is not individually named in the published estate-division narrative.

National Trust explicitly says Arabella retained Knole while Charles Sackville-Germain became 5th Duke; the connection between estate and Dorset title was broken.

Instrument status: Underlying will/trust/settlement still to extract.

Do NOT place the 5th Duke into the Heathfield ownership chain merely because he held the dukedom.

Transfer: Arabella dies in 1825; estate passes to two co-heiresses; partition arrangements complete by 1828; title-deed handover to Lord De La Warr recorded around 1829

Holding arrangement: Joint

Shared holding: Elizabeth Sackville + George West, 5th Earl De La Warr
Co-holder: George West, 5th Earl De La Warr

Previous holder: Arabella, Duchess of Dorset / Countess Whitworth

Heathfield records remain within the Sackville/De La Warr archive; exact lord-style on individual court volumes and the deed placing Heathfield in Elizabeth's 1828 share still need extraction.

Peerage succession plus 1960 archive-custody statement provides strong continuity evidence. Do not treat absence from HMC as disproof; TNA says those lists were incomplete.

Transfer: Elizabeth dies; Buckhurst/Sackville estate arrangements operate separately from peerage

Direct Heathfield proof begins in 1873, not yet located for 1870–72.

Vita Sackville-West states Elizabeth left Buckhurst to elder sons and Knole to younger sons; the peerage settlement sent Buckhurst barony to Reginald in 1870.

Instrument status: Exact estate settlement/deed allocating Heathfield still unresolved.

Do not confuse the 'jumping' Knole estate deed with Heathfield; it ultimately shifted Knole/other estates to Mortimer.

Very end of 20th century — exact year unresolved

Unnamed purchaser family / intermediary private owners

Transfer: Manorial Services catalogue states the Sackvilles' Heathfield lordship was purchased by the family of the then-current owners

The Winter 2024 catalogue expressly says the Sackville family held Heathfield until the very end of the 20th century, when it was purchased by the family of the then-current owners.

The Winter 2024 catalogue remains the strongest Heathfield-specific statement: the Sackville family held the lordship until the very end of the 20th century, when it was purchased by the family of the then-current owners. This is negative evidence only because the preserved archive may be incomplete.

Instrument status: MISSING: original late-20th-century Sackville disposal conveyance, purchaser family name/date and intermediary transfers. Unidentified vendor / then-current owner family

Transfer: Heathfield appears as Lot 6 in Manorial Services' Winter 2024 private-treaty catalogue and is marked sold

The catalogue list marks 'Heathfield, Sussex - sold' and gives an asking price of £8,500. The Heathfield text says the title had previously been bought from the Sackvilles by the family of the then-current owners.

The public catalogue establishes a sale status and a family-held predecessor context, but does not identify the vendor, actual sale price, title-pack chain or exact completion date.

Instrument status: Vendor/title pack and completed-sale instrument not public in the located catalogue. 'Sold' does not identify the vendor.
