Representative GPS point: 54.95067, -1.92446

Location / boundary notes:

Identity: confirmed — The registry's Baliol Barony is the medieval Barony of Bywell, also called the Barony of Baliol. Northumberland Archives identifies the Barony of Baliol as frequently referred to as the Barony of Bywell and places its principal manor at Bywell, Northumberland. The supplied TNA/MDR record, alternative names, Bywell St Peter location, and the associated 1570–1650 surveys and rentals are consistent with this identification.
Representative point: 54.95067, -1.92446
Basis: supported_manorial_centre — Bywell Castle and the adjoining Bywell manorial centre are the best surviving geographic focus for the barony. Historic England records the medieval Bywell Castle gate tower at National Grid Reference NZ 04941 61784; the point returned is an approximate WGS84 conversion of that reference. The castle itself was constructed by the Neville lords in the fifteenth century, so this is a supported later manorial/baronial centre rather than a proven Baliol-period caput site.
Point confidence: medium
Boundary status: representative_point_only
Boundary period: Medieval to early modern, especially the period represented by the 1570, 1600, 1608, 1632 and 1650 surveys and rentals
Boundary confidence: none
Boundary basis: Available sources establish a large and geographically dispersed barony rather than a single compact manor polygon. Historically associated lands included the estate represented by Bywell St Peter, substantial forest tracts, and townships or holdings at Bothal, Woodhorn, Newbiggin and Cresswell; other sources also associate places such as Holywell, Ovington, Mickley, Acomb, Hirst, Ellington and Lynemouth with the barony. The surviving web evidence does not provide a complete surveyed perimeter, parcel map, or sufficiently precise reconstruction of the Baliol Barony boundary. The Bywell St Peter parish or modern civil boundaries must therefore not be substituted for the historical baronial extent.
Sources:
- Northumberland Archives, Manor History File: Bywell: https://northumberlandarchives.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Manor-History-File-BYWELL.pdf — Identifies Bywell as a moiety in the Barony of Baliol and states that the Barony of Baliol is also often referred to as the Barony of Bywell; records the succession of the Baliol, Crown, Richmond, Neville and later owners and cites the relevant survey and rental records.
- The National Archives, F282442: Baliol Barony: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/c/F282442 — Supplied registry authority record for the exact manor entry, located at Bywell St Peter, Northumberland.
- Historic England, Bywell Castle gate tower, list entry 1006584: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1006584 — Documents the surviving medieval Bywell Castle gate tower, gives National Grid Reference NZ 04941 61784, and describes the castle as a significant medieval administrative and high-status centre.
- Andy King, War, Politics and Landed Society in Northumberland, c. 1296–c. 1408: https://etheses.dur.ac.uk/1729/1/1729.pdf — Scholarly discussion confirms the importance of the Balliol family and the broad territorial significance of the Barony of Bywell in medieval Northumberland.
- Beam, The Political Ambitions and Influences of the Balliol Dynasty: https://www.storre.stir.ac.uk/bitstream/1893/2533/1/Beam%20%282005%29%20-%20The%20Political%20Ambitions%20and%20Influences%20of%20the%20Balliol%20Dynasty.pdf — Describes the barony as a very large, dispersed holding in southern and eastern Northumberland, including extensive arable and forest land.
- Northumberland Past, South-East Northumberland Landholding in the Middle Ages: https://northumberlandpast.blogspot.com/2017/06/south-east-northumberland-landholding.html — Summarises the barony as including the Bywell St Peter estate, great forest tracts and the townships of Bothal, Woodhorn, Newbiggin and Cresswell, with additional associated holdings.
Warnings / uncertainty:
- The historical Baliol/Bywell barony was dispersed and included detached or widely separated lands; it should not be represented by the modern Bywell civil parish or Bywell St Peter parish boundary.
- The representative coordinate is a supported manorial-centre proxy at Bywell Castle, not proof that the surviving fifteenth-century castle occupies the original Baliol-period caput.
- No complete historically documented perimeter was located in the available evidence, so no polygon is supplied.
