Location / boundary notes:

Identity: confirmed — The registry record is specifically for Askerton Manor in Askerton, Cumberland. The associated Lanercost possessions surveys, Askerton-specific manorial surveys and map, and the historical description of the manor identify its principal manorial centre as Askerton Castle, the fortified manor house of the Dacre/Gilsland barony estate. Askerton township and the separate manor of Kirkcambeck are distinct and have not been conflated with this record.
Representative point: 55.015867, -2.704721
Basis: documented_manor_house — Askerton Castle, the documented medieval fortified manor house and historic seat of the manor; Historic England National Grid Reference NY5503569262, converted to WGS84.
Point confidence: high
Boundary status: representative_point_only
Boundary period: Medieval to early modern; extent documented in surviving surveys and descriptions from the sixteenth century onward
Boundary confidence: none
Boundary basis: The evidence establishes a substantial manorial extent including Askerton Park, demesne lands and North Moor. A late-sixteenth-century description records North Moor as about 2,000 acres or more, adjoining the Scottish border and the wastes of Tynedale, with common rights used by Askerton and other Gilsland manors. The National Archives and Cumbria Archive catalogue references also confirm surveys, a 1603–1608 map, lists of 63 tenements, valuations, rentals and later surveys. However, the accessible web evidence does not provide a verified perimeter or sufficiently explicit parcel-by-parcel boundary to construct a defensible historical manor polygon. The 11,021-acre Askerton township boundary is not substituted because it is an administrative/township extent and may not equal the manorial landholding.
Sources:
- Askerton Castle, Askerton - Historic England List Entry 1087531: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1087531 — Identifies Askerton Castle as a Grade I listed medieval house formerly a castle, gives National Grid Reference NY5503569262, and describes its early fourteenth-century manor-house origins and later Dacre additions.
- ASKERTON CASTLE historical account, based on Cumberland county history: https://www.wolfensberger.org/pages/library/books/Cumberland_County/historyofcountyo01hutc.pdf — Reports the 1591 description of the manor, including Askerton Castle, Askerton Park, demesne lands and North Moor estimated at 2,000 acres or more, adjoining the Scottish border and Tynedale wastes.
- Askerton, Cumbria County History Trust: https://www.cumbriacountyhistory.org.uk/township/askerton — Places Askerton within Lanercost parish and the Gilsland barony, identifies Askerton Castle as the principal historic site, distinguishes Kirkcambeck as a separate manor, and gives the later township acreage while noting that it is not a manor boundary.
- 1603–1608 map of Askerton, DHN/C/713/2, National Archives Discovery: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/N14327187 — Catalogue reference for an Askerton map in the Dacre/Howard estate archive; this is a relevant historical mapping lead, but the catalogue page does not expose a usable boundary image in the accessible web record.
- 1509–1547 survey of Lanercost possessions, E 315/399/ff.49-137, National Archives Discovery: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/N14300109 — Catalogue reference for an early sixteenth-century survey of the Lanercost possessions, providing direct archival evidence for the historical manorial estate context.
Warnings / uncertainty:
- The representative point is suitable for geospatial injection because it is the documented manor house/site.
- No historical manor polygon is returned. The accessible evidence does not establish a defensible perimeter.
- Do not use the modern Askerton civil parish or historical Askerton township boundary as the manor boundary.
- Kirkcambeck was a separate manor and is excluded from the identified Askerton Manor extent unless the archival surveys demonstrate otherwise.
