Location / boundary notes:

Identity: confirmed — The registry name ALEY MANOR matches the medieval manor of Aley in Over Stowey. A 1435 Somerset inquisition explicitly records “Aley, the manor,” held of Robert, Lord Poynings. Scholarly Somerset research identifies medieval Aley/Aylley with Aley in Over Stowey, and later records use the forms Eley or Aley Green. The supplied TNA/MDR record and associated medieval and early-modern accounts, court rolls and surveys consistently belong to this Over Stowey manor.
Representative point: 51.135722, -3.160561
Basis: supported_manorial_centre — Point at the historic hamlet of Aley/Ely Green in Over Stowey, the place-name location of the manor. No surviving manor house or securely identified manor-house site for Aley Manor was found; the point is therefore a supported locality/centre rather than a documented building location.
Point confidence: medium
Boundary status: representative_point_only
Boundary period: Medieval to early modern; exact period of the manorial extent not established
Boundary confidence: none
Boundary basis: The available web evidence confirms the manor's location but does not provide a documented Aley Manor boundary, mapped estate plan, parcel schedule, or sufficiently explicit perimeter reconstruction. The modern civil parish of Over Stowey and the wider later Quantock estate cannot safely be substituted for the historical manorial extent. The archive surveys and accounts may contain recoverable extent evidence, but their online catalogue entries do not expose a mapped boundary.

Warnings / uncertainty:
- Do not substitute the boundary of Over Stowey civil parish for Aley Manor.
- Do not confuse Aley Manor with the separate Over Stowey or Friarn manor whose documented medieval/post-medieval manorial complex stood beside Adscombe Chapel.
- The representative point is suitable as a locality/manorial-centre injection, but the historical territorial extent remains unverified and no polygon should be injected.

About the Manor

Aley Manor was associated with Aley, also known historically as Ely or Eley Green, a hamlet in the parish of Over Stowey in Somerset. Aley lies in the Quantock Hills area and was historically a small settlement centred on a Tudor yeoman farmhouse and associated agricultural buildings. Eighteenth-century and later sources use Eley or Aley Green in lists of manors and estates held by the Earls of Egmont. The surviving evidence indicates that Aley was treated as a manor or manorial estate, but it should not automatically be merged with the distinct manor of Over Stowey or Fryron, later called Friarn Manor. Some estates in the parish, including Aley, Adscombe, Chapel and Friarn, were later brought together within larger Egmont and Labouchere estate interests.

Ownership / Holder Account

The secure public evidence for Aley Manor is incomplete. Aley or Eley Green is explicitly included among the Somerset manors and estates associated with John II Perceval, 2nd Earl of Egmont, in the eighteenth century. The preceding acquisition or descent into the Egmont family has not been established from the sources located. A 1761 sale of the Adscombe estate from the Rich family to John Perceval, later Earl of Egmont, is documented, but the available source does not prove that the sale itself included Aley Manor and it is therefore not entered as a direct Aley conveyance. In 1833 Henry Labouchere purchased the estates of Over Stowey from the Earl of Egmont; contemporary local evidence places Aley within the resulting Quantock estate area, but the available source does not provide a deed expressly naming Aley Manor in that conveyance. The descent after Labouchere is not securely documented here. The record therefore supplies a partial descent rather than a complete chain of title.

Transfer: Earlier transfer into the Egmont family is not established. John II Perceval is explicitly recorded as lord of Eley or Aley Green and other Somerset manors and estates.

Shared holding: Egmont family estate

A published account of the Stoke Courcy and adjacent Somerset estates records John II, Earl of Egmont, as lord of Eley or Aley Green, as well as Plainsfield, Over Stowey and Friron or Friary. This is direct evidence that Eley or Aley Green was regarded as an estate or manor held by the Earl of Egmont. The source does not establish when or by what instrument the property entered the Egmont estate, so no earlier conveyance is inferred. John II Perceval, 2nd Earl of Egmont, was an Irish and English aristocrat and major Somerset landowner, born on 24 February 1711 and died in 1770.

Source: Somersetshire Archaeological and Natural History Society, Proceedings, vol. 43, paper on Over Stowey and the Stoke Courcy records, p. 76; the passage lists John II, Earl of Egmont, as lord of “Eley (or Aley Green)” and other local estates. — source link

Transfer: Purchased the estates of Over Stowey from John Perceval, 2nd Earl of Egmont, in 1833. The evidence links the purchase to the Over Stowey estate and places Aley within the resulting Quantock estate area, but does not provide a deed expressly naming Aley Manor.

Shared holding: Quantock estate

Previous holder: John II Perceval, 2nd Earl of Egmont, Viscount Perceval, Irish and English peer and Somerset landowner, 2nd Earl of Egmont in the Peerage of Ireland, 2nd Baron Perceval of Burton, 2nd Viscount Perceval of Kanturk, 2nd Baron Lovel and Holland in the Peerage of Great Britain, Member of Parliament for Dingle, Westminster, Weobley, Bridgwater and Ilchester, Postmaster General, First Lord of the Admiralty, Privy Counsellor, Fellow of the Royal Society., Lady Catherine Cecil, by marriage Countess of Egmont from 1 May 1748.

In 1833 Henry Labouchere purchased the estates of Over Stowey from the Earl of Egmont. Aley is identified by local historical sources as a hamlet within Over Stowey, and the later Quantock Lodge estate was built at Aley after the former hamlet of Aley Green was cleared. The evidence supports Labouchere as the later owner of the relevant Over Stowey estate complex, but the available public source does not expressly state that the legal conveyance was styled “Aley Manor.” This entry is therefore a cautious estate-level continuation rather than a fully deed-specific conveyance of the manor.
