Location / boundary notes:

Identity: confirmed — The registry name, location in Alne, Yorkshire, and associated court-roll and court-paper references consistently identify the historic Aldwark manor in the township of Aldwark, within the parish of Alne, North Riding of Yorkshire. The Yorkshire Gardens Trust research specifically identifies the site as Aldwark Manor in Alne and links it to the Frankland family estate and the surviving manor house.
Representative point: 54.061156, -1.2840687
Basis: documented_manor_house — Coordinates published for the surviving Aldwark Manor house, built about 1863 on the historic manor estate. The site is identified as Aldwark Manor, Aldwark, Alne, North Yorkshire, at OS grid reference SE 469 630.
Point confidence: high
Boundary status: representative_point_only
Boundary period:
Boundary confidence: none
Boundary basis: Available evidence documents the manor house, an earlier moated manor-house site, the approximately 37-acre Victorian parkland, and the much larger 1911 Aldwark Manor Estate of approximately 2,385 acres. However, no accessible source provides a sufficiently clear historical perimeter for the manorial land itself. The 37-acre parkland cannot safely be substituted for the manor's territorial extent, and the 1911 estate acreage is not demonstrably identical to the legal manor boundary.

Warnings / uncertainty:
- The documented surviving manor house is a Victorian replacement or successor site; the earlier moated manor house stood north of the later parkland and had been demolished by the first Ordnance Survey survey of 1848-1852.
- The approximately 37-acre historic parkland is not equivalent to the full historical manorial extent.
- The approximately 2,385-acre 1911 Aldwark Manor Estate is an estate-sale holding and cannot be assumed to represent the legal boundary of the manor without the sale plan or other boundary evidence.

About the Manor

Aldwark Manor is the manor and associated country-house estate at Aldwark in the historic parish of Alne, North Riding of Yorkshire, beside the River Ure, at approximately OS grid reference SE 469 630. Aldwark is recorded in Domesday Book as Adewere; the later manor had a medieval moated manor house north of the site of the present house. That earlier house had been demolished by the period of the Ordnance Survey survey of 1848-1852. The present Aldwark Manor was built on Pasture Hill about 1863-1865, with parkland, lodges, kitchen garden and estate woodland. The property was subsequently used as a private estate, requisitioned during the Second World War, acquired by the Education Committee of the City and County of Kingston upon Hull in 1949 for educational use, and later converted to hotel use. The manor identity is distinct from Aldwark in the City of York and from other places named Aldwark.

Ownership / Holder Account

The earliest located reference concerns the Domesday estate at Aldwark, which was held by Ligulf in 1086 and is described by the Aldwark Manor Estate history as having passed to Count Robert of Mortain. The available public evidence does not establish a continuous line of descent from the Domesday holding to the later manorial estate, so no intervening medieval holders are supplied. By the late sixteenth century the manor of Aldwark was owned by the Frankland family, and the manor and estate remained associated with that family into the nineteenth century. A 1861 estate survey identifies the property as that of Lady Frankland-Russell. Sources differ in how they describe the ownership immediately after the death of Sir Robert Frankland-Russell in 1849: one account attributes the later Aldwark estate to his daughter and coheiress, while other accounts describe Lord Walsingham as owner by the period in which the new house was built. The evidence securely establishes the Frankland connection and the subsequent Walsingham connection, but does not justify inventing a precise conveyance between them. Thomas de Grey, 5th Baron Walsingham, is associated with the new house until his death in 1870, and Thomas de Grey, 6th Baron Walsingham, is associated with the estate until the attempted or advertised 1911 sale. The 1911 sale apparently did not complete. In 1949 the manor house and associated estate were bought for £10,400 by the Education Committee of the City and County of Kingston upon Hull. Tenancy by Thomas Eshelby, Major Archibald Hamilton Cochrane, B. Hutton Croft and the Gunter family is not treated as ownership.

Frankland family, The family included the Frankland baronets of Thirkleby

with Frankland family

Transfer: Earlier history and transfer into the Frankland family not established in the located public sources.

Shared holding: Frankland family

Previous holder: Unknown; a Domesday and medieval predecessor holding is recorded, but continuity has not been demonstrated.

The Yorkshire Gardens Trust states that by the late sixteenth century the manor of Aldwark was owned by the Frankland family and that it continued in their ownership until the twentieth century. The death of Sir Robert Frankland-Russell in 1849 marks a documented chronological point, but the precise legal devolution of the manor after his death is not established by the stronger public sources located. This entry records the family holding without inferring a particular inheritance or conveyance.

Lady Frankland-Russell, identified in secondary genealogical sources as Augusta Louisa Frankland-Russell, later Baroness Walsingham

with Lady Frankland-Russell

Transfer: The transfer into Lady Frankland-Russell's hands is not securely documented in the located public sources.

Shared holding: Frankland family / Frankland-Russell

Previous holder: Frankland family, The family included the Frankland baronets of Thirkleby

A 1861 survey in the North Yorkshire County Record Office is identified as an estate in the parish of Alne that was the property of Lady Frankland Russell. The Yorkshire Gardens Trust also states that the present house was built about 1863 by the then owner, Lady Frankland-Russell. Because other sources place the Walsingham ownership in the same general period, this entry records the directly named 1861 owner but does not assert an exact conveyance or an uninterrupted sole legal title through the later 1860s.

Thomas de Grey, 5th Baron Walsingham, Knight, lord of Abbas Hall before 1316

with Thomas de Grey, 5th Baron Walsingham

Transfer: The source evidence associates Lord Walsingham with the Aldwark estate and with commissioning the new residence, but does not provide the deed or date of transfer from the Frankland-Russell interest.

Shared holding: Walsingham family
Co-holder: Thomas de Grey, 6th Baron Walsingham

Previous holder: Lady Frankland-Russell or the Frankland family; precise legal transfer unresolved

The Aldwark Manor Estate history states that in 1865 Lord Walsingham commissioned the new residence, and the DiCamillo Companion lists Thomas de Grey, 5th Baron Walsingham, as associated with the present house until 1870. These sources establish a Walsingham connection with the Aldwark manor estate, but the available evidence does not establish whether the legal title had already passed from Lady Frankland-Russell, was held jointly or through a settlement, or remained in another family member's name. No precise conveyance is inferred.

Thomas de Grey, 6th Baron Walsingham

with Thomas de Grey, 6th Baron Walsingham

Transfer: Succession within the Walsingham family is documented as a biographical succession, but the exact legal conveyance of Aldwark Manor is not separately located.

Shared holding: Walsingham family
Co-holder: Thomas de Grey, 5th Baron Walsingham

Previous holder: Thomas de Grey, 5th Baron Walsingham, Knight, lord of Abbas Hall before 1316

The DiCamillo Companion identifies Thomas de Grey, 6th Baron Walsingham, as associated with the present Aldwark Manor from 1870 to 1911. The Aldwark Manor Estate history states that the township of Aldwark was owned by Lord Walsingham when it was offered for sale on 29 May 1911. The sale apparently did not complete, so the 1911 date is recorded as the end of the securely documented Walsingham period rather than as a completed conveyance.

1949 – date uncertain; later use and ownership not researched as a current-title matter

Education Committee of the City and County of Kingston upon Hull, Local-authority education committee

with Education Committee of the City and County of Kingston upon Hull

Transfer: Purchased Aldwark Manor for £10,400 after the estate had been put up for sale in 1947.

Holding arrangement: Other — Institutional ownership; share not stated

Shared holding: Kingston upon Hull local authority

Previous holder: Frankland/Walsingham estate; the 1911 sale apparently did not complete and the intervening title history is not fully established.

The Yorkshire Gardens Trust reports that Aldwark Manor was put up for sale again in 1947 and bought two years later for £10,400 by the Education Committee of the City and County of Kingston upon Hull, for use as a school. This is a direct source-backed acquisition of the manor house and associated estate, but the exact legal extent of the manor title included in the purchase is not stated.
