Representative GPS point: 50.8925071, -0.8661203

Location / boundary notes:

Identity: confirmed — The TNA/MDR record F255148 is explicitly titled Adsdean Manor and is located at Westbourne, Sussex. Independent historical sources identify Adsdean, also recorded as Adsden and Ashdean, as the historic settlement and estate at the same location in the northern part of Westbourne, now within Funtington. The place-name forms Addesden and Addesdene are recorded from 1194, 1279 and 1315.
Representative point: 50.8925071, -0.8661203
Basis: documented_estate_centre — The coordinate is the published location for Adsdean Park, encompassing Adsdean House and the historic Adsdean estate. Historic England independently locates Adsdean House at National Grid Reference SU 79475 09465.
Point confidence: medium
Boundary status: representative_point_only
Boundary period: 1840 estate boundary, with later nineteenth-century park development
Boundary confidence: none
Boundary basis: A historical landscape account states that the Adsdean estate boundary shown on the 1840 estate map followed the parish boundary on the north and west and an overgrown track or wood-fringed bridleway on the south and east. However, the accessible evidence does not provide the 1840 map as a georeferenced image or list the constituent parcels and does not establish that this later estate boundary was the legal boundary of the medieval or early-modern manor. Because estate ownership and manorial lordship cannot be equated securely, no historical manorial polygon is returned.

- Index of Place-Names in Sussex: https://uwe-repository.worktribe.com/OutputFile/898506 — Identifies Adsdean at SU 7909 in Westbourne, presently Funtington, and records the historical forms Addesden and Addesdene from 1194, 1279 and 1315, with later forms Adsden and Ashdean.
Warnings / uncertainty:
- The representative point is a documented Adsdean estate/house location, not proof that the nineteenth-century Adsdean House was the medieval manor house.
- The available evidence establishes the location of Adsdean and a later estate perimeter, but does not securely establish the territorial extent of the legal manor.
- Do not substitute the modern Funtington or Westbourne parish boundary for the historical manorial boundary.
- The accessible sources do not establish a continuous descent of the manor or prove that all later Adsdean estate owners held the manorial lordship.

About the Manor

Adsdean Manor is the manorial record associated with Adsdean, a historic settlement and estate in the northern part of Westbourne, Sussex, now administratively associated with Funtington. The place is recorded in medieval forms including Addesden and Addesdene, with references in 1194, 1279 and 1315. In later sources it is also called Adsden or Ashdean. Adsdean developed as a farm and country estate; Adsdean Farm existed by at least the eighteenth century, while Adsdean House and the surrounding park were created or substantially developed during the nineteenth century. The public evidence located does not establish that every later owner of Adsdean Farm or Adsdean Park held the manorial lordship, so estate ownership and residence are distinguished from proven lordship below.

Ownership / Holder Account

The accessible evidence is insufficient to reconstruct a continuous medieval and early-modern descent of the manor. The medieval place-name evidence establishes Adsdean as an established locality by the late twelfth and early fourteenth centuries but does not identify a manor holder. The first later estate-holder evidence located places Adsdean within the Goodwood estate from 1800. An estate map of 1840 records the land at Adsdean as being owned by John Scardeville. The transfer from Goodwood to Scardeville is not documented in the sources consulted. By September 1898 the Adsdean Estate was being offered for sale while let to Mrs Kincaid Smith; a local historical account states that it is thought to have been bought by the Tennant brewing family, but this is not sufficiently secure to present as a proven conveyance. Archibald Hay Tennant was resident at Adsdean Park by 1909, but residence alone does not prove ownership or lordship. The public sources consulted therefore support a partial estate history, not a complete legal descent of the manor.

Goodwood Estate

Transfer: Adsdean Estate is stated to have formed part of the Goodwood estate from 1800; by the 1840 estate map the land was recorded in the ownership of John Scardeville. The precise transfer from Goodwood to Scardeville is unknown.

Holding arrangement: Other

Shared holding: Goodwood estate ownership

This is evidence of estate ownership or inclusion within the Goodwood estate, not an explicit statement that the Duke of Richmond or the Goodwood estate held the separate manorial lordship of Adsdean Manor. The source also reports that the house was reputedly built by the 3rd Duke of Richmond, but that architectural attribution is not treated as a conveyance.

Transfer: The 1840 Adsdean estate map records the land as being in John Scardeville's ownership. No deed or other source located establishes when or how he acquired it, and no later source securely establishes the date of his disposal.

Holding arrangement: Other

Shared holding: Adsdean estate ownership

Previous holder: Goodwood Estate

John Scardeville is directly linked by the 1840 estate map to ownership of the Adsdean land or estate. The evidence does not expressly describe him as lord of Adsdean Manor, so this entry is recorded as estate ownership rather than proven manorial lordship.
