GPS Location & Recorded Land Areas

Representative GPS point: 51.24428, 1.18954

Location / boundary notes:

Identity: confirmed — The supplied TNA/MDR record F287538 identifies Adisham Manor in Adisham, Kent, and the associated historical evidence matches the ecclesiastical manor of Edesham/Adisham held by Christ Church Priory, Canterbury. Medieval administrative evidence places its Court Lodge immediately west of the Church of the Holy Innocents. This distinguishes it from other Kent manors with similar names.
Representative point: 51.24428, 1.18954
Basis: documented_manor_house — Adisham Court, at OS grid reference TR 2271 5429, is the surviving manor-house site immediately west of Holy Innocents church and is the best identifiable location for the medieval Court Lodge/manorial centre.
Point confidence: medium
Boundary status: representative_point_only
Boundary period: Medieval to early modern; extent varied by period and by the distinction between demesne land, manorial jurisdiction, rents and appurtenant holdings.
Boundary confidence: none
Boundary basis: The evidence establishes a substantial manorial centre at Adisham and indicates that Adisham Manor's territorial and economic relationships extended beyond the modern civil parish, including holdings, tenant land or quit rents associated with Ickham, Staple, Chillenden, Goodnestone and neighbouring districts. Hasted records approximately 700 acres of court-lodge and demesne land in the later period, while the manor's court jurisdiction included the upper half hundred of Downhamford, comprising Ickham, Adisham and Staple. These references do not provide a documented perimeter of the historical manorial land, and jurisdictional or rent relationships cannot safely be converted into a single polygon. No sufficiently authoritative manor map, survey or parcel-level reconstruction was located to justify boundary injection.

- Edward Hasted, The History and Topographical Survey of the County of Kent, volume 9: https://www.durobrivis.net/hasted/octavo/1800-hasted-o-09.pdf — Records Adisham Manor's post-Dissolution settlement on the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury, approximately 700 acres of court-lodge and demesne land, and the manor's court-leet jurisdiction over the upper half hundred of Downhamford, including Ickham, Adisham and Staple.
- The National Archives, Discovery: Adisham Manor court rolls, U15/9/1-4: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/N17336072 — Catalogues medieval Adisham Manor court rolls from 1271-1274, corroborating the existence and institutional continuity of the manor but not supplying a recoverable perimeter.
Warnings / uncertainty:
- The representative point is suitable for identifying the manor's historical centre, but the precise relationship between the medieval Court Lodge and the present Adisham Court building is inferred from their location and historical continuity rather than demonstrated by a surviving medieval site plan.
- The historical extent should not be substituted with the modern civil parish boundary.
- References to Ickham, Staple, Chillenden, Goodnestone and neighbouring districts may represent appurtenant lands, tenant holdings, quit rents or jurisdictional relationships; they do not by themselves define a contiguous manor polygon.
- No boundary polygon is returned because the available evidence does not document a defensible perimeter of Adisham Manor's manorial land.

About the Manor

Adisham Manor was a substantial ecclesiastical manor in Adisham, Kent, known as Edesham in Domesday evidence. Its medieval administrative centre was the Court Lodge immediately west of the church of the Holy Innocents. The estate extended beyond the modern civil parish: medieval and early-modern evidence associates tenant land and quit rents of Adisham Manor with places including parts of Ickham, Staple, Chillenden, Goodnestone and neighbouring districts. Domesday evidence records the estate as held for the Canterbury ecclesiastical establishment, with the monks of Christ Church as subtenants or estate holders under the archbishop's superior lordship. After the Dissolution, the manor was settled on the newly established Dean and Chapter of Canterbury in the 33rd year of Henry VIII, conventionally AD 1541. A nineteenth-century gazetteer reports that it was then held by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, but the precise legal transfer from the Dean and Chapter has not been established in the sources consulted.

Ownership / Holder Account

The earliest surviving historical tradition assigns Adisham Manor to the monks of Christ Church, Canterbury. Edward Hasted states that King Eadbald of Kent gave the manor to the monks in AD 616, free from secular services except the traditional trinoda necessitas. The Electronic Sawyer catalogue records the relevant Eadbald-to-Christ-Church charter tradition as S1609, while Hasted also records a royal confirmation of Christ Church's lands including Adisham in the late Anglo-Saxon period. Domesday evidence for 1066 identifies the unnamed monks of Christ Church as holders at Adisham, while the superior lordship or tenant-in-chief position is associated with the Archbishop of Canterbury; in 1086 the estate was recorded under Archbishop Lanfranc with the monks of Christ Church as subtenants. Hasted explains this arrangement as the post-Conquest division of the Canterbury church's revenues by Archbishop Lanfranc, under which Adisham was allotted to the priory. The manor remained with Christ Church Priory until the Dissolution of the priory in the 31st year of Henry VIII. Hasted states that Henry VIII settled it on the new Dean and Chapter of Canterbury in the 33rd year of his reign, AD 1541. A seventeenth-century survey directly records Adisham Manor among the estates of the Dean and Chapter and identifies a named tenant, Mr Dancy; that tenancy is not treated as ownership. John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer, published in 1870, says that the manor was then held by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. The exact date and legal instrument of any transfer from the Dean and Chapter to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners remain unresolved. A modern local-history account instead states that ownership continues with the Dean and Chapter, so the nineteenth-century institutional position should be treated as requiring archival confirmation rather than as a fully documented conveyance.

Transfer: Later institutional holding reported by a nineteenth-century gazetteer; the precise conveyance or statutory transfer from the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury has not been established

Holding arrangement: Other — Not stated

Shared holding: Ecclesiastical Commissioners

Previous holder: Dean and Chapter of Canterbury

John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales, published in 1870, states that the manor was then held by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. This is the latest securely dated historical statement located that explicitly names an institutional holder of Adisham Manor. No deed, statute, vesting order or other primary instrument establishing the transfer from the Dean and Chapter was found in the present research. A modern local account instead says that ownership continues with the Dean and Chapter, so this entry is retained as a reported later holding with an unresolved institutional succession rather than as a fully proven conveyance.
